Sony’s ‘Until Dawn’ Movie Looks Nothing Like The Video Game

Imagine that you are in charge of creating a film adaptation of a video game. Let’s say you were going to redo The Last of Us. But instead of Joel and Ellie, you chose completely new characters. And instead of the film taking place in a zombie apocalypse caused by fungi, you decided to show a climate apocalypse. Everything that made the game what it was has now changed, and the result is a generic disaster movie.

That’s pretty much the same vibe I’m feeling after Sony’s First Look. Until dawn an adaptation based on one of my favorite horror video games. There are still teenagers, just different teenagers, and they still show up in the mystery house, only it doesn’t take place in winter and looks completely different and much less threatening. As far as I can tell, there are no wendigos. If you only saw the footage below without words Until dawn I suspect you didn’t even know it was an adaptation of that video game.

Here’s the video:

The only saving grace here is the role of Peter Stormare, aka Black Ops 6″Substitute” – but even Stormare (who voiced Dr. Hill in the game) can’t make it exciting.

As a horror movie separate from the game, it’s a pretty cool concept. The description of the film is at least somewhat interesting. In some ways it’s more like a game than a movie. Basically, every night the characters are killed by some new terrifying threat (it’s like a movie that will span different genres of horror films), and every new day they come back to life to try again. Here’s a quick overview:

“A year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends travel to the remote valley where she disappeared in search of answers. While exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves being stalked by a masked killer and brutally killed one by one… only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they are forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the mortal threat is different, each more terrible than the previous one. As hope fades, the group soon realizes that the number of deaths remains limited and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”

This is basically Groundhog Day with teenagers and horror films.

(Notice how much creepier and more dangerous the Washington House looks in the game than the house in the image at the top of this post.).

However, the strangest thing about all this is that Until dawn First of all, they are screened. It’s absurd as well as unknown the film is absurd. unknown It was essentially Naughty Dog’s attempt to capture the swashbuckling adventures of Indiana Jones in a video game (Harrison Ford even starred in a commercial For Unknown 3). Adapting these games into a movie is pointless since you already have Indiana Jones movies.

Until dawn is an interactive storytelling experience designed to make players feel like they are in a horror movie. That’s the whole point of the game! Turning a game designed to feel like a horror movie into a horror movie pretty much defeats the purpose! It even featured recognizable stars like Rami Malek, which only added to the feeling that this was a game-movie. This is even stupider than unknown device It’s like saying, “We’re going to adapt this chess video game into a board game!” I suppose that’s the point of making such big changes to the game’s story, but if you’re going to make such big changes, it also defeats the purpose of the adaptation.

Well then. I hope it’s good, but I have serious doubts.

Sony recently announced a whole line of game-to-movie adaptations. which you can read about here. New trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 is also out and worth a look.
