Sora is OpenAI’s new video generation tool, here’s everything it can do
Today, OpenAI continues its 12 days of product releases with a blockbuster release: Sora, its video generation model, Available now to the public. That’s all it can do.
Sora does more than just create original videos on command
Sora was initially released in February, but was initially only available to selected researchers. Today it is open to the public.
What is Sora? It is a video generation model that creates videos based on your text input.
There are a lot of asterisks in that description, and there are limitations in this early version, but that’s its basic functionality.
This means you can create completely original videos by just entering commands, but there are many other use cases where it might be more practical.
This is what Sora can do, According to the OpenAI website:
- mix: Use Remix to replace, delete, or reimagine elements in the video (e.g., delete spaceships, add jungles)
- recut: Find and isolate the best frames, extending them in either direction to complete the scene
- storyboard: Organize and edit unique video sequences on your personal timeline
- ring: Trim and create seamless repeating videos with loops
- mix: Merge two videos into one seamless clip
- style presets: Use presets to create and share styles that spark your imagination
As the list above indicates, Sora can be an interesting tool for novice users to create original videos.
But its biggest advantage (at least for now) may be that it helps YouTubers and other filmmakers with their video editing process.
Who can use Sora and its current restrictions
Sora, unlike ChatGPT, is not available to free users. Instead, it requires a subscription.
You can use Sora with a $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription, or via ChatGPT Pro just launched for $200 per month options.
Here are the limits for each:
Chat GPT Plus
- Up to 50 priority videos (1,000 points)
- Resolution up to 720p, duration 5 seconds
ChatGPT Professional Edition
- Up to 500 priority videos (10,000 points)
- Infinitely relaxing videos
- Up to 1080p resolution, 20 second duration and 5 concurrent builds
- Download without watermark
This last point is especially important, as it means ChatGPT Plus users will have a watermark added to all their work with Sora – whether they like it or not.
Despite these limitations, Sora is a particularly compelling addition to the ChatGPT Plus subscription and could drive users to sign up—especially iOS 18.2 new ChatGPT integration That’s almost it.
