What you need to know
- The new TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G will be available exclusively in North America later this year.
- The phone has a NXTPAPER key, which switches the display to a more convenient mode and can emulate reading using electronic ink.
- TCL is also announcing the TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus, featuring the company’s latest display technology and the budget K32.
TCL may not be very popular in the US, but that hasn’t stopped the company from releasing new affordable phones, and the latest model comes with some pretty intriguing technology.
The new TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G is a phone exclusive to North America and is also the first time TCL is bringing its new NXTPAPER dongle to the region after launching with TCL NXTPAPER Series V IFA 2024. At the touch of a switch, the 6.8-inch 120Hz FHD+ display will switch to a more comfortable mode that reduces harmful blue light.
TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G also features a Max Ink mode that mimics the look Electronic ink device How BOOX Palmawhich should be perfect for reading. Essentially, TCL wants you to have two devices in one.
Android Central Phones Editor Nick Satrich tested TCL NXTPAPER technology against other display technologies, saying that viewing the LCD panel is “very pleasant thanks to its characteristic soft diffused light.”
The phone comes with a 50MP primary camera on the back and a 32MP front camera. And while TCL didn’t immediately reveal the chipset for the phone, the device comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage, which should be enough for most people in this price range (around $199).
The phone will also feature new artificial intelligence capabilities that TCL says will “optimize task management and efficiency, seamlessly adapting to user needs for a smoother, more responsive experience.”
In addition to the TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G, the company is also bringing the affordable TCL K32 to North America, priced under $100. Unfortunately, TCL hasn’t announced exact release dates for either device, but they will arrive in the US later this year and will arrive in Canada in May.
Finally, TCL is announcing the new NXTPAPER 11 Plus, a tablet featuring the company’s latest NXTPAPER 4.0 technology. This should allow the tablet to offer improved display clarity and color accuracy, while also taking advantage of the NXPAPER key so users can switch to their preferred display mode at will.
The tablet features an 11.5-inch display with a 2.2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. TCL says the 550-nit peak brightness should help improve outdoor visibility, something Sutrich noted the previous model struggled with.
Apart from the display, TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus will be equipped with artificial intelligence features such as Text Assist, which can rewrite, summarize and translate text. Circle to search will also be available on tablet, allowing users to draw circles with their fingers or T-Pen to search for content on their displays.
Pricing and availability for the TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus weren’t immediately available, but we’ll be keeping an eye on this device and the rest of TCL’s 2025 lineup throughout the year.
