The AI PC era: Dell brings models to the edge

Artificial intelligence will become more personalized, accessible and closer to home with the advent of the AI-enabled personal computer or AI-enabled PC.

Dell Technologies Inc. Strategy The company’s goal is to help companies move models to the edge for large-scale deployments. The ultimate goal is a holistic AI system where customers can have the models they need where they need them.

Dell’s Sam Bird talks about bringing AI models to perfection.

“We’ve done everything we can to leverage artificial intelligence; we put it into our devices,” said Sam Bird (pictured), President, Client Solutions Group, Dell. “Essentially, these are accelerators located next to the processor, so you can think of it as making the applications we use every day more intelligent. For our commercial customers, the most exciting thing to me is that they will be able to take the data generated at the edge onto their devices, into their PCs, and run their AI models on those devices.”

Bird spoke with CUBE Research. Savannah Peterson For Dell Bet Big on AI Computers at CES 2025during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s live-streaming studio. They discussed how Dell is leading the era of AI-powered PCs. (*Disclosure below.)

Computer with artificial intelligence: transferring models to devices

According to Bird, Dell has been using AI in its PCs for a long time, but now it’s even more fully integrated into their devices. These include the Pro Monitor for professional-grade products, the Dell Pro Max for maximum productivity, and Alienware Area 51 Gaming PCs.

“We have this age-old debate about the cart before the horse, software over hardware,” Byrd said. “We incorporate this into our equipment. We’re really committed to delivering the very best to our customers, and you’re seeing software in the ISV community starting to really embrace that in their applications.”

Dell has also invested in cooling technology that increases the power of processors while reducing noise. Neural processors—specialized hardware designed for artificial intelligence—can save companies time and energy throughout their business, Bird said.

“We work in an enterprise environment and there are a lot of security applications running there,” he said. “When you can run them on the NPU, you can do more and not impact battery life and system performance, so that’s really important for users. The same thing happens with creative apps…things like background blur and other things in collaboration, drawing, and rendering apps.”

Powerful creative products tend to have faster lifecycles, and it’s natural for different product groups to have different lifecycles, Bird said. Dell AI Pro Studio is designed to give companies the tools to deploy AI models on their devices at larger or smaller custom scales.

“The computer is the perfect place for you, me and others to have agents to help us in our lives,” he said. “We’re trying to make it easier for our customers to install their models on devices, and then I think it’s anyone’s guess as good as mine, but we’re seeing AI evolve so quickly… we’re making it possible with our technology. for customers of systems that will go on sale next year.”
