long story short
- ES-DE update 3.1.1 adds many new features to the popular emulation front end.
- This includes numerous bug fixes on Android, as well as support for four additional languages.
- Other changes include more alternative emulators and experimental multi-window support.
Setting up emulators on Android devices has always been a nightmare, but projects like EmulationStation Desktop Edition (now officially called ES-DE Frontend) make things much more manageable. Today, update 3.1.1 is released, bringing a variety of new features to every supported platform.
First, ES-DE Frontend now supports four additional languages: Catalan, German, Dutch and Korean. This builds on the addition of 11 new languages in September.
On Android, the update fixes a number of audio bugs and replaces the default audio driver with OpenSL ES. This should reduce audio latency on most devices. Experimental support for multi-window mode is also available on devices that support multi-window mode, such as tablets and foldables. Experimental support for Nintendo WiiU emulation has also been added.
The Android version of ES-DE Frontend is a partially closed source paid application.
Three alternative emulators are also supported: SWF Player standalone for Flash systems, Infinity standalone for Pico8, and Virtual Virtual Boy standalone for Virtual Boy. The FinalBurn Neo RetroArch core has been removed due to lack of compatibility.
If you’re not familiar with EmulationStation, it is an emulator frontend that creates graphical interfaces for all emulators in a single application. Greatly simplifies installation and use Emulator on Android And includes other useful features such as a built-in scraper for downloading game information and media.
