The best movies leaving Netflix and more in December 2024

The end of the year is quickly approaching, and while that means all kinds of things, one thing we might be lost on is how many streaming services are clearing out their 2025 catalogs. Netflix, Prime Video and the Criterion Channel next year, but for now we’re focusing on the best movies coming out in late December.

This month’s film selections include a perfect companion to one of the most surprising games of the year, a perfect companion to this Christmas Bob Dylan biopic, one of the best comedies of the 2010s, and a horror classic.

A slightly more official Bob Dylan biopic, Completely unknownmay have just been released in theaters, but it’s still the Coen Brothers’ stellar performances that most evoke the New York folk scene of the 1960s Inside Lewin Davis.

The film tells the story of Llewyn Davis, a struggling folk musician in the 1960s who was talented but entirely on the wrong side of the road to fame. The film follows Llewyn’s eternal quest to get his foot in the door of the industry without sacrificing the artistic integrity that he believes is the soul of folk music, no matter what those around him say.

This melancholy masterpiece about chasing art and passion, wherever it takes you, is one of the brothers’ best films ever, with Oscar Isaac’s absolutely incredible central performance among the best of the 2010s One of the performance works. So if you need a little extra folk music before or after watching Timothée Chalamet’s version of Dylan, this is the perfect stop.
