The First Destiny Game Gets Strange Update For New Years

An update for the first Destiny game arrived unexpectedly on January 5, leaving players confused. The game’s headquarters, called the Tower, was suddenly covered in holiday decorations.

This event in the Destiny universe is called “The Dawning” and is the game’s version of Christmas. Players were confused as to why The Dawning was returning to the first Destiny game, given that developer Bungie stopped supporting it after the release of Destiny 2 in 2017. The update is purely cosmetic, with no new quests, items or events.

One likely explanation is that it was simply an oversight. YouTuber Breshi dug into the game’s design files and came to the conclusion that this update was cut from the The Taken King’s Dawning event back in 2016. Breach suggested that this event was supposed to start on January 5, 2016, but when it was cancelled, Bungie scheduled it to be released on January 5, 2025 as a temporary fix and intends to come back later and remove it.

Even though it’s been seven years since Bungie ended official support, the online servers for the first Destiny game are still running and players are still logging in. It’s likely that Bungie simply forgot about this canceled event, and almost a decade later it was suddenly updated. Bungie has not responded, and it is unclear if they will take any action, such as returning the Tower to its original state.

Bungie is still hard at work on Destiny 2, as well as the upcoming Marathonalthough it’s unclear when the latter will be released. Bungie has reportedly canceled the spin-off game. codenamed Reckoningand it looks like Destiny 3 is not planned. Mobile game called Destiny Risingcurrently in development at NetEase.
