The Health Monitoring Boom Only Gets Weirder From Here

Withings also used CES to launch Cardio Checkup, an in-app service that is available now and compatible with all Withings devices that have ECG capabilities, such as ScanWatch. In addition to alerting you to possible cases of atrial fibrillation, it will, as its name suggests, check you quarterly and provide access to specialists through the app.

And that’s not all: I have a few more days of meetings ahead of me. It’s a strange time to see CES filled with so much home health technology. The coronavirus pandemic has spurred a surge in digital health innovation, but 2024 pay— CNBC analyzed 39 publicly traded digital health companies and noted that two-thirds of them went out of business or even went out of business within a year.

The pullback may be due to the fact that consumers quite reasonably decided that we power I don’t want to know that much. It’s simply much easier to control your cortisol levels than to do anything about the conditions that caused it, such as quitting your job or stop forest fires.

When I spoke with Abbott, I learned that I’m not the only one who is squeamish about inserting threads under the skin. (I’m still waiting for my Apple Watch monitor your blood sugar levels.)

Still, I finally pulled myself together and plugged Lingo into the Pepcom. Under the watchful guidance of Abbott, I rolled up my shirt sleeve, inserted the sensor into the dispenser, and pressed it against my skin. It continued with a click. It felt like someone had snapped me hard on the arm—a slight sting, but not like a thousand fiery needles had pierced my skin.

I connected the sensor to the Lingo app and wore it overnight. When I woke up this morning, I discovered – after one night – that I started experiencing hypoglycemia in a dream. I’m already tired of walking too much and not eating enough at CES! So much for the lack of practical advice. I’ll eat my words (and have a snack before bed).
