The ROG Ally just got a 2x fps boost — Here’s how to turn it on
Paul Jones/Android Authority
long story short
- AFMF 2 is now available on ASUS ROG Ally and improves fps in most games.
- Updated interpolation technology adds frames to improve smoothness and reduce latency.
- FSR 3 remains the preferred method for supported games.
The ROG Ally has been out for over a year, but ASUS continues to improve the device with killer software updates. The latest update adds support for the latest version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), which can increase frame rates by up to 2x on almost every game on the market.
like FSRAFMF uses frame generation to increase fps, thus smoothing the overall experience. AFMF 2 was released in October with several improvements over the initial version, including lower latency, better compatibility, and support for devices with integrated graphics (such as the AMD Ryzen Z1/Z1 Extreme on ROG Ally) Performance mode.
While AFMF 2 is impressive, Asus points out that you should still use FSR 2 or FSR 3 on games that support it. This is because it is integrated into the game itself, so it has additional information to produce interpolated frames more accurately. However, there is only one Hundreds of games support FSR As of this writing, AFMF 2 will be the best choice for most games.
How to enable AFMF 2 on ROG Ally
After installing the latest update on ROG Ally, there are several ways to enable AFMF 2. The more frames you start with, the better your results will be.
To enable AFMF 2 globally, all you need to do is turn on a switch in the updated Armory Crate app:
- Open armory chest and switch to settings tab.
- tap Performance and open GPU settings tab.
- switch AMD Fluid Motion Framework exist.
If you want to speed things up, you can add it to the Command Center shortcut to quickly toggle it on and off depending on your game. It’s also worth pointing out that the new performance mode profile is automatically selected in the AMD software for optimal performance on ROG Ally, but you can change it if you’re using an external GPU or just want to modify it.
Armory Crate also allows you to automatically switch settings based on the game on launch. This is useful for games that support FSR, which generally performs better than AFMF. You need to do the following:
- Open armory chest and highlight a match.
- beat X Open Game optionsthen select Set game profile.
- scroll down to GPU settingsthen switch AMD Fluid Motion Framework exist.
Repeat this process for your entire collection to optimize gameplay on ROG Ally. It is worth noting that some games do not support AFMF, and Asus specifically mentioned “Forza Horizon 5”. These games will not launch even if AFMF is enabled in Armory Crate, but you can override the setting in the AMD application.
