There’s A Teaser Trailer For The Superman Film’s Teaser Trailer
In our cynical timeline, hype is no longer something that arises organically based on popular enthusiasm, but something we already feel. Here’s the trailer for tomorrow’s James Gunn-led reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe, Supermanjust received its own trailer.
Given the premise—one piece of marketing material designed to get you interested in watching, another designed to get you interested in seeing the movie—the resulting diminishing returns are a set of shots that tell little Any information about our movies. We see reaction shots of people being surprised to see – presumably – a man who can fly, stop bullets, and jump over tall buildings in one leap. We also see less than a second of Superman himself.
Well, damn, it worked, didn’t it? We released it.
Let’s just stick with the idea that we’re doing this as a cultural observation about the insane level of hype and fanaticism surrounding Warner Bros. and DC Studios, telling us that we’ve reached that point and finally seen a concrete glimpse of the film. They probably want that too.
What do I find most interesting? yes What shows here is how common it is when it comes to media based on Superman. Forgetting the shots of crowd excitement that make up most of the footage, we’re treated to a regular Daily Planet office (including Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and Skylar Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen), the moment Superman flies by, ice and snow inevitably surround his Fortress of Solitude, and a small speck of Superman disappears into the clouds. Every character could be borrowed from any character adaptation from the early 90s lewis and clark The gray slope to 2006 superman returns– Oh my god, we just know this isn’t from 1948 Superman Serialized or published in 2013 man of Steel Because it’s in color.
However, it’s also arguable that all of this was a bold move, a genuine statement by Gunn (although who knows how involved he was in the marketing), and was backed up by two other factors: the title and the score .
call your movie Supermanwithout a subtitle, is a statement. There is already one SupermanIn 1978, Richard Donner’s version never got any better across three re-releases and six movies (not to mention the character’s repeated whiplash in Snyder’s DCU). Originally I was going to call Superman: Legacyand removing the suffix is bold. Gunn invites direct comparisons to Christopher Levi’s classic film – a beautifully shot film that remains timeless nearly 50 years later.
Then there’s the theme. It’s there, subtle at first, and then – over the obligatory bass “thommmm” that all superhero movie trailers are legally required to have – a faint rendition of the John Williams classic tune emerges. Once again, it’s a firm statement that this film is on the same level as the classics and evokes the same tonal reverence that arguably both ushered in and defined the modern era of superhero movies.
Gunn is a funny filmmaker who has found well-deserved success with funny, raunchy movies like this slide and Excellentfollowed by cartoonish jubilation and hilarity Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and suicide squad. I’m really excited because he’s trying to make something out of DC’s work that isn’t scary, ending the era of Snyder’s well-intentioned but horribly dull attempts, and he’s clearly a natural fit for the sillier, more subversive side of the comic book series . But play Superman Just that straight, right on the nose? I’d love to see what comes of it. Even though I doubt tomorrow’s “trailer” will tell us anything useful.
My desperate hope is that, eventually, at lastwhen someone writes Superman The script doesn’t rely on his superhuman training to introduce any danger or plot. My “Kryptonite Time” stopwatch will start running and God I hope it never stops. This is one of the great flaws of this great American hero, and the only way anyone could find an invincible, all-powerful god in a movie interesting was to keep making him incompetent, vulnerable, and dependent on the arrogance of his enemies. Save him.
(Shout out to The CW’s recently completed superman and loisDespite some clichés and an over-reliance on various kryptonites, it manages to make Clark Kent far away Way more interesting, especially in a remarkable third season following Louis’ cancer story.
So, are you hyped about the trailer, the six-month trailer, the movie before it hits theaters on July 11, 2025? I really hope that by then we won’t be exhausted by its simple existence.
