Fraudsters are using increasingly sophisticated methods AI technology to create persuasive emails, text messages, and AI-generated videos.
Recent McAfee Poll found that nearly two-thirds (59%) of Americans have either been a victim of a scam or know someone who has been a victim of a scam, with average losses reaching nearly $1,500.
To combat this trend, antivirus software The company has launched its AI-powered fraud detector, a solution designed to protect users from falling into these digital traps.
McAfee Fraud Detector
McAfee’s fraud detector is powered by Smart AI, the same technology that powers the company’s online security tools.
This system identifies and flags suspicious emails and text messages before users interact with them. It also flags AI-edited videos that may impersonate trusted individuals or promote fake support.
It blocks potential threats and provides explanations to help users understand why a message or video is dangerous, as well as common scam tactics.
The company said the tool will soon be available in additional languages, including French, German and Japanese, ensuring wider accessibility.
This tool integrates with popular platforms such as Gmail, Outlook, Android, and iOS. Users do not need to manually parse links or download files for verification; the tool works automatically. If potential fraud is detected, a notification will be sent to the user.
Starting this spring, Fraud Detector will be included in McAfee+ and Total Protection plans at no extra cost.
Once activated, the tool provides real-time protection, continuously working on the user’s smartphones, laptops and tablets.
“Fraudsters are getting smarter every day, using technologies like artificial intelligence to make their tricks more convincing and harder to detect,” said Steve Grobman, chief technology officer at McAfee.
“They play on people’s emotions – such as fear, urgency or trust – to get what they want,” he added.
“That’s why we created McAfee Scam Detector, powered by artificial intelligence. It alerts you to scams before they can cause harm, helps you take control of your personal information, and helps you develop the skills you need to outsmart scammers for good.”
