TikTok will appear in the US Supreme Court on Friday
in the latest attempt to overturn the ban, in a case testing the limits of national security and free speech. The popular social media platform is challenging a law passed last year that would have ordered the firm to be separated from its Chinese owner or blocked from entering the United States by Jan. 19. The US government argues that without a sale, TikTok could be used by China as a tool for espionage and political manipulation. But TikTok rejects that claim, saying it was unfairly targeted and the measure violates the free speech of its estimated 170 million American users. BBC

Stunning photographs of Mercury have been released, showing the sunlit plains and possibly icy craters of the solar system’s smallest planet. Three images taken by the BepiColombo spacecraft were released by the European Space Agency (ESA) on Thursday after the craft passed 183 miles (294 km) above the planet’s north pole. Close-up images beamed back to Earth showed what may have been icy craters with their floors in permanent shadow and vast, sunlit northern plains. Sky News
