TikTok Still On Track for January Ban as Appeals Court Upholds Ruling
Popular social network TikTok reportedly did not receive a reprieve from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and still faces an injunction scheduled for January wall street journal.
TikTok and some users of the social network Challenges to April bill This forces Chinese companies to byte jump TikTok for sale. The bill gives ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok to a company outside of China, and if the sale doesn’t happen, TikTok will be unable to be distributed in the United States.
TikTok claimed the bill was unconstitutional because it violated free speech, but a court rejected the claim.
While the ban is set to take effect in January, TikTok may appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court seeking an emergency stay. The Supreme Court will then decide whether to hear the case.
If TikTok is banned, Google, Apple and other app resellers will not be able to provide downloads of the app or provide updates to the app. Internet hosting services will also be banned from supporting the app, making it impossible for U.S. users to download it. However, TikTok users can continue to use the app as long as the app is functioning properly.
ByteDance does not intend to sell TikTok, and even if the company complied and did so, China would need to approve the sale. The Chinese government has made it clear that it firmly opposes any sale of TikTok applications. ByteDance said it would be impossible to hand over the TikTok source code to a new owner because it would take years for new engineers to become familiar with it for routine maintenance.
U.S. lawmakers want to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese company out of concern that the Chinese government could force ByteDance to hand over data on U.S. users, and there are also suggestions that China could use TikTok for political propaganda.
