Ubisoft’s New Game Has Rayman! And Blood Dragon! And NFTs!
Remember NFT? They’re ridiculously stupid obvious scam Starting in 2021, people (you will laugh) sold the “rights” to JPEGs! Yes, I know, these are things you can right click and make an infinite number of. So silly. Anyway, Three years later everything fell apartUbisoft launched a game with the theme of “grift”.
Laser Chief: The Game is an attempt to revive a once popular Far Cry 3 spin off, blood dragonand Netflix spin-off cartoons, captain laser hawknow as a top-down shooter, with Rayman’s review and related perks Assassin’s Creed. On the surface, it sounds like someone took a tumble in Ubisoft’s supply room. But it doesn’t end there, because if you want to play, you need NFT!
They come in the form of Niji Warrior cards, which can be purchased through the game’s website, like any normal game, and then you have to log into your “wallet”. It’s a place that keeps your fake money and pictures, and in this case, it wants you to use something called Eden Online, which is Ubisoft’s own universe creation. (You can also log into Coinbase or Walletconnect, but not being a crypto bro, I don’t have such a thing.) So, since I actually yes Being the good games journalist that I am, I kept this thing linked to my personal Gmail account. This apparently generated a wallet that I could associate with the account, which meant I was able to “enter the photo booth.”
Here I was repeatedly told that I could “reveal” my card, and then was directed to a website called magicden.io, an NFT “marketplace” that had somehow survived, where I discovered that “minting” All 10,000 of the card’s free options have already been taken. But I need my Niji Warrior card to play! So when I read about how this “expanding universe of Netflix series” is “built on the Arbitrum blockchain,” and how these “10,000 AI-generated NFTs evolve based on your performance and participation, unlocking in-game exclusive access to the assets, governance and benefits associated with iconic Ubisoft franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Rayman and Splinter Cell. “I wonder if it’s already too late.
Only here, on a non-Ubisoft website, in small print in a section ironically titled “Vision,” is it revealed that “The Mint” is part of “Rainbow Warrior Holder Early Access,” “Full release” is happening in 2025, although the game is listed as “removed” on both Ubisoft’s website and store. It looks like we now have to click “Collect” to buy one of these from someone else. For some reason, I suddenly thought of Egyptian architects.
I must stress that the Ubisoft website implies that you just have to “show” your ID, there is no mention of money, or that you need to purchase cryptocurrency to play the actual game.
Speaking of gaming, I thought I’d give it a try and see what I could do without destroying my crypto virginity. Of course, the first few attempts ended with error messages after discovering that Ubisoft Connect had once again forgotten all my login credentials since the last time I was forced to use it.
I was told that the game “could not start downloading (Code: 17006)” and “(Code: 17017)”. The link to the support page tells me to visit the “Live Feedback Updates section on Ubisoft Help,” which links to the latter. The Ubisoft help page does not have a live updates section. This is very good indeed.
Then, as I was about to write this, another attempt saw the game download successfully! (For some reason, it refuses to recognize both of my gaming SSDs in its list of installed drives.) Here it is! I hit launch and this is my favorite screenshot of the game so far:
Okay, okay, that’s not fair. Apparently the first load failed. I tried again.
So no, you can’t even see the menu screen before you get yourself involved in the dark, barely regulated underworld of cryptocurrency scams.
The cheapest card you can buy right now is 0.0037 ETH, which is equivalent to $12.06 USD. The most expensive is (OMG) 50 ETH, which is $162,975.50.
Hell, I was only two quarters away.
oh! If you’re thinking, “Okay, $12, I can maybe put that away and look at it,” then the minimum amount that can be added to the wallet seems to be $21!
I can’t tell you anything else right now because Ubisoft is working beautiful It’s hard to hide what the game is like from someone who’s not willing to go to the moon. The publisher accidentally forgot to upload any trailers to its own YouTube channel, instead opting for a hardwired version on its website… which doesn’t show any in-game footage. Like, not even a hint.
Ubisoft also Polygon noticeddid not remember mentioning the game on his social media, but instead used Eden online vest account. there i was A glimpse of the game itself can be found in the cartoon sequences. Interestingly, this is shown in tiny window to make it as illegible as possible.
it It seems It’s like a crappy free-to-play mobile game, but since we haven’t played it we can’t tell if that’s the case.
that is Laser Chief: Game, Everyone. Perhaps this is the breakthrough experience that the NFT and crypto world has been craving, and it might even finally match the glory of NFTs. Logan Paul’s Cryptozoology.
(We’ve reached out to Ubisoft to find out why the site says “Show your ID now” but doesn’t mention payment, and really wanted to see if we could access without having to voluntarily walk into a cryptocurrency-shaped rake game.
