Want to start learning LLM and Generative AI? Start with Ollama and this article.

Generative artificial intelligence and large language models (LLM) are buzzwords that are redefining how we create, automate, and interact with technology. From chatbots that sound almost human to tools that can generate lines of code or full-blown content in seconds, the potential is limitless.

However, starting your LL.M. program can be overwhelming. The complexity of models, infrastructure, and terminology can give even experienced developers pause. You may be asking: “Where do I start?”.

that’s there become If you’re a developer who wants to try generative AI without getting lost in a maze of settings or spending a lot of money on a cloud service, Ollama is the perfect place to start. It’s simple, powerful, and respects your time and privacy.

What is Orama?

Ollama lets you run and manage large language models locally. Yes, local. That means no cloud dependencies, no massive data transfers, and no recurring bills for cloud computing power.

  1. Choose your language model: Whether you want to explore conversational AI, code generation, or content creation, Ollama lets you choose from a variety of models. No need to jump between platforms; everything you need is right here.

  1. Fast and cost-effective: Run the model directly on your computer without relying on cloud services. This means no additional charges for computing power and faster response times – perfect for beginners on a budget.

  2. Start with small things and learn from big things: Ollama is designed for all skill levels. Whether you are just getting started with artificial intelligence or looking to expand your toolkit, the platform provides an easy entry point into the LL.M. and a clear path to more advanced capabilities. The installation process is very painless. You can check out the quick installation guide in the next section.

  3. Hands-on experiments: Experiment locally without worrying about setting up complex infrastructure. Download the model, start playing, and learn as you go—without a huge upfront commitment.

How to install Ollama and get started?

Here’s how you set up Ollama locally and start running language models:

  1. Go to become Download the appropriate installer for your operating system.

  1. After installing locally, open a terminal and execute the following command:
ollama run llama3.2
Enter full screen mode

Exit full screen mode

…or any model of your choice.

You should see it downloading the model (if this is your first time running the model), and when it’s done you’ll see a prompt:

You are ready! You can try various models (but please note that the model images are very large).

That’s it for today’s article! If you are planning to start your Gen AI / LLM journey, please follow me on Medium (it has been a while since my last post, but I am committed to posting a very useful technical blog about AI every week again) .
cheers!
