Watch this self-driving Waymo taxi circle a parking lot instead of taking its passenger to the airport

What the hell?! We are now as close to 2050 as we were to 2000. Technology has come a long way, but it is far from perfect. Just ask the person who couldn’t get to the airport on time because the self-driving Waymo he was in kept circling the parking lot.

In December, Mike Jones was returning home to Los Angeles from Scottsdale, Arizona, and drove to the airport in one of Waymo’s autonomous vehicles.

As Jones described the incident on LinkedInHe got into the driverless car, buckled up and hit the road. But the taxi had other ideas: it started driving in circles around the parking lot.

Jones captured the disturbing moment on video as he called Waymo customer service. “I need to catch a flight. Why is this thing going around in circles? I feel dizzy,” Jones said. “He’s circling the parking lot. I buckled up. I can’t get out of the car. Was it hacked? What’s happening? I feel like I’m in a movie. Is someone playing a prank on me?”

A Waymo representative asks Jones to use the company’s app to try to stop the car since she apparently doesn’t have the ability to control the car. The video ends with the representative saying he is trying to stop Waymo.

Jones said Waymo circled the parking lot eight times before the problem was resolved. In the main post, he writes that he “almost missed” his flight, although in the comments he says that he missed it. Other reports suggest that he actually made the flight. There are also a few comments asking why he never used the Pull Over button on the passenger screen.

Jones ends his post by stating that Waymo never reported the incident via email, text, or call because its customer service is automated and driven by artificial intelligence.

Waymo representative said Jones was only delayed by five minutes, was not charged for the ride, and the software bug that caused the problem has since been fixed, the Los Angeles Times reported. The company also said it tried to contact him via voicemail.

In August, Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said the company exceeded the threshold of 100,000 paid trips per week. This milestone was especially impressive considering Waymo surpassed 50,000 paid rides per week just in May.
