Weak iPad Pro sales mean supplier switching to iPhone screens
Sales of the latest models are lower than expected. iPad Pro The production lines have reportedly remained underutilized and LG Display plans to repurpose them for the iPhone.
How well received like the 2024 iPad Pro and its OLED screen, it failed to ignite as many buyers for the upgrade as expected. Now a new report says that low demand and the likelihood of it increasing has prompted LG Display to switch from iPad Pro to iPhone screens.
According to Elekdespite the transition from one OLED screen size to another, repurposing the production line is main undertaking. The cost of the work is estimated at $1.4 billion.
The creation of the iPad Pro screen production line initially cost the company $2.3 billion. Despite the additional new investment, the result is that LG Display will save money and also increase production of iPhone screens.
LG Display already has three production lines for iPhone screens. Switching the iPad Pro line to iPhone will allow the company to produce 15,000 more screens per month.
Besides the difference in size, the iPhone and iPad Pro screens require several different processes. For example, the iPad Pro uses a dual-tandem OLED panel instead of one, as well as a glass substrate, while the iPhone uses a polyimide one.
It is reported that making the iPhone display will require different touch screen manufacturing equipment. There are other differences enough that LG Display should receive Apple’s approval.
It’s possible that LG Display is actually aiming to create a production line that can switch between two screens. Despite this, it is believed that the company has a stock of iPad Pro screens and is therefore likely to move to the iPhone as soon as possible.
The OLED screen was one of the key selling points of the 2024 iPad Pro, along with its M4 processor and a significantly thinner design. The iPad Pro was also the only iPad with a larger 12.9-inch screen, but it was slower and cheaper. iPad Air this is now available as an option.
So it’s likely that the iPad Air has taken some of the iPad Pro’s market share, even though it only has an M2 processor. However, the iPad remains Apple’s second-biggest device despite its long-term outlook. decline in sales.
