WhatsApp announces improvements to audio and video calls

WhatsApp announced on Thursday that it is rolling out a slew of improvements to audio and video calling during the holidays. According to Meta, users can expect better call quality as well as some other new features – so read on as we take a closer look.

“Calls on WhatsApp continue to grow in popularity around the world. More than 2 billion calls are now made on WhatsApp every day. Ahead of the holidays, we’re rolling out new calling features on desktop and mobile to make it easier to connect with the people you’re talking to. Connecting with loved ones is easier than ever. Meta said in a blog post.

Firstly, WhatsApp will now allow users to select specific participants in group chats to initiate calls, so you can call specific people without disturbing others. “Ideal for planning a surprise party or gift,” the company notes. In addition, Meta has added new camera effects to video calls, which will make conversations more fun. New effects include puppy ears, karaoke microphone and underwater filter.

But more important than the new effects is call quality. Meta says it’s working on improving the calling experience on desktop so that users can more easily initiate calls from WhatsApp on their computer. For video calls, the company promises higher-resolution streaming for individual and group calls.
