There appear to be some separate issues with the Windows 11 Start Menu, the first of which is a visual glitch that causes the menu’s search theme to incorrectly appear in white when users use a dark theme in Windows.
As a dark theme user, I can see how this is extremely annoying and obviously visually inconsistent, although I’m not sure this is a widespread bug by any means.
Even more worryingly, there appears to be a bug here that breaks the Start menu after applying the above update.
Windows’ latest explanation is that if Windows 11 detects that your system has an older version of a specific DLL file (MSVCP_140_APP.dll), the Start menu may stop functioning entirely.
This technical website recommends Possible workarounds for updating this packagebut I recommend only trying this if you’re really sure you know what you’re doing. Otherwise, if you’re affected, the only other options are to ditch the December 2024 Update or live with a non-functioning Start menu until Microsoft investigates this (and hopefully implements a fix).
There’s another bug in Windows 11 that appears to cause the Start menu to topple over in a similar manner, but regular users won’t experience this as it only affects Citrix usage using Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) The person (enterprise). This issue will be resolved by the IT administrator.
More bugs in latest Windows 11 update
Individual users have also reported other issues related to these December Windows 11 patches.
