With o3 having reached AGI, OpenAI turns its sights toward superintelligence

OpenAI has been intent on building AGI since its founding in 2015, when the concept of AGI was, as Altman put it in Bloomberg, “non-mainstream.”

“We wanted to figure out how to build it and make it widely useful,” he wrote on his blog. “At the time, few people cared, and if they did, it was mainly because they thought we had no chance of success.”

But the company has been recruiting talent with the “just build AGI” bait, and in April 2023 it appears to have at least made some progress on that front: Microsoft researchers said ChatGPT “sparks» AGI. They demonstrated that “beyond language proficiency,” GPT-4 can solve “new and complex problems,” including math, coding, vision, medicine, law, psychology and more, without special prompting.
