You Really Should Add These Netflix Sci-Fi TV Shows to Your Watch List

Stranger Things quietly premiered its first season on Netflix in 2016, and the show quickly became a hit. “The Goonies” and Stephen King’s works, has now developed into a tribute to the movies of the 1980s. The show follows a group of kids in Hawkins, Indiana, who discover a sinister dimension lurking beneath their feet after meeting a mysterious girl they name “Eleven.” Government cover-ups, diabolical hell beasts, and a cast of beloved misfits make up this masterpiece of genre drama.

“3 Body Matters” is co-created by “Game of Thrones” actors David Benioff and DB Weiss and “The Terror” producer Alexander Wu, and is adapted from Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning novel. This high-concept science fiction series connects a watershed moment in China in the 1960s to the present day, as a group of scientists must face emerging global threats the likes of which humanity has never seen.

Inspired by the comic books created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the show follows a group of adopted superhero siblings who are raised to save world. From time travel to saving humanity from multiple apocalyptic events, the ongoing adventures of the dysfunctional Hargreeves subvert their expected genre tropes. It’s weird, offbeat, hilarious, and poignant.

Sue Parcell takes a familiar superhero narrative and flips the script. The show tells the story of four black men living in South London who suddenly gain superpowers. What connects each of them to their newfound abilities is their family history of sickle cell — a common genetic disorder. Using the genre as its narrative foundation, the show delves into the human drama that plays out between these characters, while highlighting relevant cultural themes such as racism, human trafficking, and predatory health care practices.

Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror set the standard for modern genre anthology series. Every story is featured in the series, which currently has six seasons and a interactive independent film Worth watching, the story takes place in a near-future world where technology affects humanity in wonderful, strange and terrifying ways. Black Mirror is an uplifting, even terrifying TV show that will leave you thinking long after the credits roll.

They broke the mold while making The OA. Created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the two-season series follows Prairie Johnson (Marling), a young blind woman. Story, she returns to her family and regains her sight after being missing for seven years. Where has she been all these years? How could she see it? Parallel existences across multiple dimensions, that is. Well, this answer only scratches the surface of this extremely unique and layered program. Come for the quantum physics, stay for the interpretive dance.

Like “Stranger Things,” “Dark” begins with the mysterious disappearance of a child. Rather than plunge the town into another version of the Upside Down, the German series dabbles in time travel and explores the impact of a missing child on families and communities. Dark, a slow-burning noir about the horrors of intergenerational trauma, ran for three seasons on Netflix. It will definitely get under your skin.

Created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar (the same duo who brought Dark to Netflix), 1899 follows a group of passengers on a ship bound for New York at the turn of the century. This is not just any ordinary period piece. As soon as the show begins, time travel, multidimensionality, reality simulations, and other crazy sci-fi elements are on screen. It may not have a second season yet, but there’s still a lot of genre goodness here to consider.

In Parasite: Grey, an alien parasite lands on Earth and begins turning humans into shape-shifting monsters. In order to fight against the growing threat of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”, the survivors (also known as “Greys”) rise up to save mankind and the earth. Inspired by Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, this Korean series should please all horror and sci-fi fans.

“The Matrix” creators Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski teamed up with “Babylon 5” creator J. Michael Straczynski Sense8 to Netflix. This supernatural drama follows eight random people from around the world who discover that they are emotionally and spiritually connected to each other. Teams labeled “sensory” learn from each other because they are literally forced to step into each other’s shoes and embrace new and exciting skills. Things wouldn’t be complete without a mysterious organization hunting them down. The show explored timely issues of gender, sexuality and identity over two seasons, blending genres such as TV drama, Korean drama, Bollywood and European noir, and aired around the world.

Based on the books by Richard K. Morgan, Replica exists in a future world where consciousness can be transferred from one body to another. Joel Kinnaman played ex-soldier Takeshi Kovacs in the first season. His mission to solve a murder turns into a journey of self-discovery as he struggles to find a lost love and find answers about his past life. In season two, Anthony Mackie will take over the role and further advance the cyberpunk noir story.

Combining different animation styles with live-action, Love, Death + Robots is an anthology series unlike many others. The series has been compared to Black Mirror, delves into a world where sentient robots, creatures, and other such creatures are more human than humans themselves.

Inspired by the 1965 show, “Lost in Space” follows the Robinson family as they embark on a space mission to colonize a new planet as humanity is on the verge of collapse. The show focuses on family drama, which can be off-putting at times. Thanks to sociopolitical strife, cool alien robot friends, and Parker Posey’s villainous Dr. Smith, the show manages to stay afloat.

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill star in this mind-bending drama from Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”) and Patrick Somerville (“Asgard”). The 10-episode series follows Annie (Stone) and Owen (Hill) as they take part in a drug trial that will allegedly cure all their problems. As you might have guessed, that’s not the case. Stone and Hill seem to be having a lot of fun throughout the show as they get to try out a variety of different characters. Sonoya Mizuno, Justin Theroux, and Sally Field join the cast to make this an underappreciated gem that deserves your attention.

The first three seasons of “Manifesto” were all NBC originals. After the show was canceled by the network, Netflix swooped in and revived the show. The story follows the passengers of Flight 828 as they arrive at their destination five years after the original takeoff. Survivors begin to have premonitions and visions that help them save others from disasters that have yet to happen. It’s kind of like Lost and Final Destination having a baby.

“Alice in the Border” is adapted from Aso Ha’s manga and tells the story of a group of characters in a parallel version of Tokyo who are forced to participate in a series of twisted games in order to survive. This battle royale-style thriller will appeal to fans of death-match games like Squidward, The Hunger Games, and Battle Royale.
