YouTube Kids brings long-awaited vertical UI to mobile app

For years, YouTube Kids was limited to landscape use, even on handheld iOS or Android phone Portrait. While YouTube videos are typically viewed horizontally, this limitation makes it difficult for some users to navigate mobile application and search for content. Fortunately, this is no longer the case as YouTube Kids now offers a vertical user interface.

At the top of the homepage, there’s now a streamlined bar that provides quick shortcuts to video categories like Shows, Music, and Games. The stylish navigation bar at the bottom allows users to jump between the “Home”, “Search”, “Your Information” and “Profile” tabs. The company emphasizes that “the new ‘Your Stuff’ page makes it easier to find content to ‘watch again,’ share, and download.”

Considering the bloat and clutter of the retired UI, the new update should make using YouTube Kids smoother in both vertical and horizontal orientations. But keep in mind that you may not see a completely revamped design right away. As with most major changes to Google apps, the company will roll it out gradually over the next few weeks. To receive it, make sure you’re running the latest version of the app and wait for your account’s turn.
