YouTube takes action against clickbait videos, starting in its biggest market
You’ve probably seen them—those flashy YouTube titles and thumbnails like “Breaking News” or “The Shocking Truth About the President” designed to lure you in with the promise of drama, only to deliver some Completely off-topic content. Well, YouTube is finally resorting to these clickbait tactics. Basically, clickbait is online content that uses sensational or misleading headlines to attract clicks. It can be very annoying when a title or thumbnail makes a bold promise that the film fails to deliver, especially when it comes to breaking news or current events. This type of deception can leave viewers feeling cheated, frustrated, or misled, especially when they turn to YouTube for timely, important updates. You may have encountered some of these situations yourself, such as the video titled “The President Resigns!” — only to discover that the film didn’t mention the president’s resignation at all.
YouTube hasn’t yet clarified how it plans to define “news” or “current events.” For example, does breaking news only apply to politics and government, or does it also apply to sporting events? The platform has not yet explained how it plans to detect cases where a title or thumbnail does not match a video’s content.
But hey, I’m glad to see a platform as big as YouTube with over 2 billion users starting to take a closer look at misleading content and taking action (hopefully real and not just for show) to combat it.
