Zoox and Waymo hope Trump will ease barriers for self-driving cars
Group representing self-driving car companies on Tuesday called on the U.S. government to do more to accelerate the adoption of autonomous vehicles and remove barriers to their adoption.
“The federal government is the one who should be leading the way when it comes to vehicle design, construction and performance, and we simply haven’t seen enough action from the federal government in recent years,” Jeff Farrah, who heads the Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturers Association. “, he said in an interview.
The group includes Volkswagen Ford, Waymo by Alphabet, Zoox from Amazon.comUber and others.
The group released a policy framework calling on the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to “claim responsibility for the design, construction, and performance of autonomous vehicles and increase its efforts in key areas.”
The group added that “the federal government’s inaction has created regulatory uncertainty” and warned that China is determined to take U.S. leadership in self-driving vehicle technology.
“We want to make sure there is a clear path to getting these next-generation vehicles on the road,” Farrah said.
“We are disappointed by the lack of progress.”
